Hayle is eight miles from us, about fifteen minutes along the A30, which makes it one of the few towns we can reach at short notice.
It is really two towns joined in the middle. Foundry, around Foundry Square and Penpol Terrace, is the old Harvey's works end, with the railway viaduct above it and the harbour inside the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. Copperhouse is the other end, where the black scoria blocks in the old walls came out of the smelting works. Commercial Road runs between them with terraced frontages hard against the pavement.
Then there is the ground, which is the part that catches people out. The towans are sand, so bases spread and sole boards do real work. The quays are made ground and old wall. And the estuary funnels wind across frontages that look sheltered.
