Penryn is about 26 miles from our yard in Penzance, roughly fifty minutes, and it comes before Falmouth on the run in, so we reach it first rather than passing through it.
It is one of the oldest towns in Cornwall, and the part that matters to a scaffolder is that none of it has ever been widened. The spine climbs the ridge from Lower Market Street through Higher Market Street into St Thomas Street, buildings straight onto a pavement barely wide enough for two people to pass, and long narrow plots running back from every frontage. Off that spine the lanes drop towards the quay at a gradient you carry gear down rather than wheel it.
That produces a problem Falmouth does not have. The front often has nowhere to stand and the back is reached on foot, down the length of somebody's plot.
The walls decide the rest. Penryn is granite and slate hanging: rubble stone that needs tie positions chosen with care, and hung slate that will not take a tie in the wrong place. Around The Praze and Glasney Road the stock sits close-packed and old, much of it inside the conservation area.
