Newlyn is two miles from the yard, five minutes with a loaded wagon, and it is the town our gangs are in most often. A second run for extra boards costs an hour here, not a day.
The harbour is still a working fish dock, not a view, and the streets behind it climb hard. The Strand and Fore Street sit straight onto the road with no ground in front to stand a base plate on. Chywoone Hill and Trewarveneth Street rise at a gradient that settles the design before anything else: a wagon cannot get near a good number of these houses, so the gear is carried in and the base is levelled off a slope.
Then there is the salt. Elevations facing the bay take spray all year, so render, pointing and timber are often softer than they look. We check what we are tying into before we plan the ties.
