Helston is a straight run across on the A394 and one of the shorter journeys we make, under half an hour from the yard.
The town centre is the interesting part. Coinagehall Street is wide and Georgian and falls the entire length of itself, with the kennels, the open granite water channels, running down both sides. That rules out a lot of the obvious places to stand a scaffold. Base plates have to be set clear of the channels and stepped to the fall, sole boards levelled rather than laid, and the structure squared up from a surface going downhill under it. It is a survey job every time, not a measure over the phone.
Meneage Street is the opposite problem. Narrower, busier, tight to the kerb, with loading windows that decide when the lorry can be there.
Off the centre, Wendron Street and the roads out towards Culdrose and Gweek carry more ordinary stock, semis and cottages with ground to build off. Then the land opens out onto the Lizard, and the weather changes what a scaffold has to withstand.
