Temporary Roof Scaffolding in Penzance & Across Cornwall

A fully covered working deck over the building, so a re-roof or a restoration carries on in the dry instead of stopping every time the weather comes in off the Atlantic. Designed to TG20, erected by our own gangs, priced in writing before it starts.

What Temporary Roof Scaffolding Is, and When You Need It

A temporary roof is a free-standing weatherproof cover built over a scaffold, carried on aluminium beams and finished with tensioned sheeting or a cassette roof system, so a building can be opened up and worked on in the dry. It spans the whole structure rather than sitting on it, so the existing roof can come off entirely underneath.

You need one whenever the building will be open to the sky for longer than the weather can be trusted: a full re-roof, storm damage, a conversion, or restoration work on a historic building.

In West Cornwall that is most of the year. Covered work carries on. Uncovered work waits for a dry week, and the waiting is the expensive part.

Expert Temporary Roof Scaffolding Across West Cornwall

Sheeted temporary roofs

The standard solution for a re-roof. Beams flown across the scaffold, sheeting tensioned over the top, gables closed in. The roof underneath can be stripped completely and the job runs through rain.

Fully encapsulated scaffolds

The roof plus the elevations wrapped, so the whole building is enclosed. That is what you want for containment, for dust and debris on a busy street, or where the walls are worked too.

Restoration and heritage covers

Long-duration covers where the structure stays open for months and the fabric underneath cannot get wet, taken as a specialist subcontractor to conservation builders. See our heritage scaffolding page.

Storm damage and emergency cover

Getting a compromised roof enclosed while the repair is designed and programmed.

Fragile roofs, asbestos and glazing

Crash decks and birdcage scaffolds under a fragile or asbestos-cement roof, and bridging over conservatories rather than bearing on them.

I would highly recommend this company. They were professional, efficient and punctual, even taking the rig down the day after we had finished with it and on a Saturday! Communication with Jordan was easy, much better than other companies that couldn’t be bothered.

Very efficient and professional set up. Thoughtful and thorough ... Jordan even adjusted the top access boards to ensure our builder had easier reach to fit the new flue linings for the chimney. We couldn’t recommend him more highly

Why choose us

Why Choose JJ Cornwall Scaffolding for Temporary Roof Scaffolding

West Cornwall takes Atlantic weather before anywhere else in the country does. The Met Office's 1991 to 2020 climate averages put annual rainfall across Cornwall at over 1,000 millimetres, and the wettest stretch runs from October to January, exactly when most re-roofing programmes are trying to finish. Add salt-laden wind on an exposed coastal elevation and an open roof in a Cornish winter is not a scheduling problem, it is a standing-still problem.

A temporary roof is designed around that. The frame is specified for the exposure of the site it stands on, built to TG20 and erected by gangs working to SG4.

Temporary Roof Scaffolding Built for Cornish Weather, by a Local Specialist

Jordan James owns JJ Cornwall Scaffolding and prices every temporary roof himself from the yard in Penzance. Ten years in scaffolding, Advanced Supervisor qualified, with a background on structures where long-duration weather protection is the job, not an extra. Jordan's experience includes the Dawlish rail reconstruction, South Crofty tin mine, Hayle viaduct and Lloyds Bank in Bristol, working as a subcontractor to larger companies.

“People weigh the cost of a temporary roof against the cost of the scaffold. Weigh it against what a fortnight of standing still costs you in December, and it is not close.”Jordan James, JJ Cornwall Scaffolding

Areas We Cover Across West Cornwall

The exposed coastal towns are where a cover earns its keep: St Ives, Marazion, Newquay, Perranporth and St Agnes, along with Newlyn, St Just, Hayle, Helston, Truro and Falmouth. Travel time east is quoted honestly.

What a Temporary Roof Scaffolding Quote Includes

Frequently asked questions

How much does a temporary scaffold roof cost?+
It is priced on the span, the area covered, the beam system, the height it is flown at and how long it stays up. The scaffold underneath is priced alongside it, because the cover cannot stand on its own. The comparison that matters is the cover against the cost of the job standing still.
What is a temporary roof and when do I need one?+
A temporary roof is a free-standing weatherproof cover built over the scaffold, carried on aluminium beams and sheeted above them, so the building can be opened up and worked on in the dry. You need one whenever the roof comes off and the weather cannot be trusted.
How do roofers get on the roof without scaffolding?+
On short jobs some work from a tower, a mobile platform or a roof ladder, which is legitimate for brief tasks. Once a roof is being stripped and people are up there for days, none of those give the edge protection the job needs.
Will it keep the job going through Cornish weather?+
That is what it is built for. West Cornwall gets Atlantic wind and driven rain straight off the sea, and a shower that stops an open roof does not stop a covered one. The trades underneath keep working, materials go on dry, and the programme holds instead of waiting for a gap in the forecast.
Can you scaffold a fragile or asbestos roof, or over a conservatory?+
Yes. Fragile and asbestos-cement roofs are worked over a crash deck or a birdcage beneath, so nobody puts weight on the covering itself. Conservatories, glazed extensions and rooflights are bridged rather than loaded. Which method a job gets is decided at the survey and written into the quote, not improvised on the morning.
How long does one stay up?+
As long as the work underneath takes. Most re-roofs need weeks, restoration programmes often months, and a long-duration cover is specified differently from a short one because it sits through more weather. The hire period is stated in the quote, and an extension is agreed and priced in writing before it runs on.
Do you sheet or fully encapsulate?+
Both, depending on the job. A sheeted roof covers the roof area and keeps the weather off the work underneath. Full encapsulation wraps the elevations as well, which is what you want for containment, for dust and debris on a street, or where the walls are being worked at the same time.
Do you work with roofers and main contractors?+
Constantly. Roofers, builders, restoration contractors and main contractors are a large part of our work, and the cover is programmed around their trades rather than ours. If you are pricing a winter roof, ring before the quote goes out, because a cover changes the sequence and is easier to allow for early.
