What Chimney Scaffolding Is, and When You Need It

Chimney scaffolding is a working platform built to reach a stack safely, either as an independent tower carried from the ground or as a bracketed platform taken off the building where there is no room below. Chimney scaffold hire covers all of it: access designed for the stack and the street it stands in, erected, hired for as long as the work takes, then struck.

Repointing, flaunching, a new liner or a rebuild each need someone at ridge height for days at a time.

Expert Chimney Scaffolding Across West Cornwall

Independent stack towers

Built from the ground on their own base, boarded at the height the stack is worked from.

Bracketed access

No ground to build off, so the platform comes off the elevation through a designed tie pattern. Most mid terraces need this.

Stack access within a full scaffold

Built into the main domestic scaffolding where the roof is being worked at the same time.

Stack removal and rebuild

Somewhere to land materials and bring debris down rather than carry it down a ladder.

Chimney towers go up most weeks in West Cornwall: granite terraces with no access but the frontage, holiday lets before the season, stack repairs booked in by sweeps.

I would highly recommend this company. They were professional, efficient and punctual, even taking the rig down the day after we had finished with it and on a Saturday! Communication with Jordan was easy, much better than other companies that couldn’t be bothered.

Very efficient and professional set up. Thoughtful and thorough ... Jordan even adjusted the top access boards to ensure our builder had easier reach to fit the new flue linings for the chimney. We couldn’t recommend him more highly

How a Chimney Scaffolding Job Runs

1

Tell us the stack

A photo of the elevation from the road answers most of it.

2

We look at the access

Height, pitch, and whether there is ground to build off.

3

You get the quote in writing

Scope, hire period, and what would change the price.

4

We agree a date

Set around your sweep, roofer or builder.

5

We erect it, then strike it

Usually a day. Ring when the work is done.

Why choose us

Why Choose JJ Cornwall Scaffolding for Chimney Scaffolding

According to the Health and Safety Executive's guidance on ladders, a ladder should be used only for light work of short duration, which the HSE puts at up to 30 minutes in one position. Repointing a stack or rebuilding above the roof line is neither.

So a chimney gets what a full elevation gets: designed to TG20, erected to SG4, by an Advanced Supervisor's gang.

What a Chimney Scaffolding Quote Includes

Frequently asked questions

How much does chimney scaffolding cost?+
It is priced per job: the height to the stack, whether the access is built off the ground or bracketed off the building, and how long you need it. Quotes are free and come in writing with the scope on them, and no extra work starts until its price is confirmed in writing.
What kind of scaffold do you need for a chimney?+
Either an independent tower from the ground beside the elevation, or a bracketed platform off the building where there is no ground room. The space around the house and the pitch decide which, along with what the structure can properly be tied or fixed into. That gets settled on the visit rather than over the phone.
How long does it take to put up?+
Most go up in a day, often half of one. Bracketed access or a stack being rebuilt takes longer, and the quote tells you which applies before we start. You get a firm date for the erection when we quote, and the strike is booked the same way rather than left open.
Can you scaffold a chimney on a terrace or a narrow street?+
Yes, and it is a large part of what we do here. Where there is no ground room the access comes off the building. If the scaffold stands on the pavement or the road, Cornwall Council requires a licence, which we apply for before erection.
Do you work with chimney sweeps, roofers and builders?+
Regularly. Sweeps and roofers pass us stack work every month, and we programme around their dates rather than the other way round. Two gangs work out of the Penzance yard, so a trade booking access on behalf of a client gets a straight answer on whether the date holds instead of a maybe.
How long can it stay up?+
As long as the work needs. The hire period is stated in the quote, and an extension is agreed and priced in writing before it runs on, so ring us before the period ends rather than after. Tags and handover documentation come on request at no charge.
