St Just is the most westerly town in Britain and the weather behaves accordingly. Here the wind is a design input and the granite decides how the structure is tied. Both are settled at survey, before the price goes on paper.
St Just is seven miles from the yard, twenty minutes out on the A3071, and we treat it as a planned run rather than a call we squeeze in.
The reason is the wind. There is nothing between the Atlantic and the top of this parish, so a scaffold on an exposed gable at Botallack or out towards Cape Cornwall carries load a sheltered street never puts on it. Tie density goes up, the structure gets looked at again after a blow, and there are days when the honest answer is that nobody should be lifting tube until it drops. SG4 governs how our gangs work at height, and we would sooner move a day than push one.
The buildings ask the second question. This is granite throughout, from the terraces around Market Square and Bank Square to the cottages at Nancherrow, Tregeseal and Kelynack, and granite with hard pointing is unforgiving if the anchor is wrong. Jobs also travel complete with the gang, because there is nothing to nip back for at this end of the peninsula.
